Since I have known my baby sister, from her infancy noticeably observing and measuring the far out space around her, I have felt like the child's comprehension of their surroundings is nearly perfect (until we begin to teach them lies about everything). When she was a baby baby I used to say oh I can't wait till you learn the language so we can have a conversation. I was delighted in this moment, when I first set up the microphone, to see how much she had to say without the language. I reminded myself that teaching speech is part of the process, but progress is not indicative of the child's intelligence nor development. I have always spoken to her as though she can understand exactly what I am saying (I believe she does understand most of it, and speech is merely physical practice) but I have learned new ways to engage and listen, remembering learning for a child goes far beyond parroting words and terms. Activity, exploration, dance, all manners of non-verbal communication make up the joy of interacting with a tiny child
