A message from the admin:
"Salon des Refuses was created in response for the need for a safe environment for young outsider artists to share their work, receive constructive criticism, share in similar ideals, debate issues freely and offer personal expertise to those in need. You do NOT need to consider yourself an "artist" to join this forum. If you have an inch of creativity in your body and you feel that many of your ideas seem to fit "outside of the box" from your peers, this is the place for you. Whether you are able to share your own original art work, offer commentary or criticism from a simple viewer's perspective or share inspiring pieces of work that you truly enjoy - every piece of your participation is of great value to the community.
This forum will not be moderated in a traditional sense. A moderator's job is simply making sure there is no spam or off-topic advertisements, proper organization to easily find good and informative posts and to keep the peace if a debate becomes too heated by simply closing the topic and asking the participants to move to a private venue. You may speak about ANY topic but you will be banned if you continually use hate speech or are an otherwise immature person who cannot be open minded and is unwilling to learn. A selection of derogatory terms have already been censored because there is not much of an excuse to use the words in question in any viable context. Forum moderators reserve the right to add to this list any offensive or derogatory terms in the future as well. It's probably best to just not be an asshole.
You may post WHATEVER you want to post. Please attempt to keep it organized so that everyone can find your post easily; if you are unsure of where something should go, simply post it where you feel is best and if there is a better fit, it will be moved by a moderator once it's noticed. Please be aware of Creative Commons rights as well as respecting the original copyright holder of the work you may be posting. All works taken from a website should be posted with a direct link back to the original source you found it from. If you fail to provide a source and it cannot be found in a search to be added by a moderator, you will be asked to provide a link. If you cannot provide a link, the post will be deleted from the forum. We respect all artists from all mediums and simply want to enjoy and share work with others - not take credit, steal or otherwise deface someone else's work.
If your work has been posted here and you want it taken down, please contact a moderator ASAP so that it can be removed, no questions asked."
QUESTIONS ASKED BY NO ONE:
a) Why the forum? Why not on Tumblr or Facebook?
Not everyone has a Facebook, or if they do, they don't enjoy keeping active on it for very long. I find this is very common with this kind of outsider group and did not want to put the focus on a social media website and instead have something that is almost a "secret" to keep it a safe environment without friends or family butting in without an invite. As much as I love Tumblr, I don't feel like it lends itself well to creating a community and instead is a platform to showcase your personal work or work made by a group of people.
b) Can I join?
YES. You don't even need to ask. Just register and post. You don't even need to introduce yourself, simply post whatever you feel would add to the community if you're not too fond of words. Of course, you can still introduce yourself if you want and it will certainly help you find your place in the community.
c) Can I post _________?
YES. Post whatever you want outside of things that would be illegal in your jurisdiction. I would assume we don't have a serious need to post a large amount of hardcore porn, but pornography can be considered art in certain contexts and I wouldn't want to quell the idea of that in someone.
d) How do I post my own pictures? How do I post my own videos?
Once your photo or video is hosted (Tinypic.com and Youtube.com are very simple solutions), above the message box is a series of buttons. The button with an image of a picture will allow you to insert a code. You may also use BBcode if you are familiar with forums. Beside this button is video one which will allow you to embed your video directly on to the forum. Please, please try to not hotlink a photo from someone's personal website; it costs them bandwidth and they never appreciate it as much as you think they might.
e) Do I still own my work if I post it here?
ABSOLUTELY. You keep 100% total control of your work and any work you post here will never be used for commercial or personal gain. If there is a need to have your work act as a representation for the forum or community, you will be asked well in advanced and you will still maintain all rights to that particular work.
f) I'm really organized, active & diplomatic; can I be a moderator?
If you are willing to participate in the community on a regular basis, keep the forums organized and contribute frequently then YES. I am not in the business of creating a hierarchy - if you're willing, you can have it. However, if you remain inactive on the forums for longer than a week with out prior notification, you will be stripped of your moderator privileges but maintain full membership. Nothing personal, there's just no reason to have a dozen inactive moderators. If you would like to be a moderator, please send your request via PM to me. You must have an active membership for at least five days before you will receive moderator privileges to be sure you are willing and able to contribute.
g) Can you make a board for _____?
YES. Unless the board you are asking for is an incredibly niche topic that would receive very little traffic, your request will most likely be filled. Just PM me with your request.
